It's time again to highlight our local heroes. Send us pictures of your friends and family members who are currently in or have previously served in the Military.     Joseph Marino, served our country during the Korean conflict. What is amazing, he first served with the Army and then served with the Air Force! It is very rare for someone to serve in two branches of the service.

    Ron Musgrove Jr is currently deployed to Afghanistan Jan 2012-present, He is a 2001 Austintown Fitch Graduate and has been in the Navy since 2003. This is his 2nd deployment. He is based out of NOSC Youngstown with the Navy Reserves at the Air Reserve Station in Vienna. He currently resides in North Jackson.

    CPL Mark Kuntzman, USMC is a veteran of Iraqi Freedom and is currently serving in Afghanistan. He is a combat engineer and working with the Sappers. Mark is a Boardman native and is stationed at Camp Pendleton. He enlisted in 2007.

    US Army Master Sergeant, Tim Pleso, Returned from Iraq where he earned a Bronze Star. He retired in May 2009, after 23 years of service. He is in the front row far left in the picture.

    Lance Corpal Nathan Miller 24 of Bristolville serving in the Marines since June 2008. He is currently stationed in Yuma,Arizona.

    Corporal Timothy J. Lauer. US Army. Served in the 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Served from 03/30/04 until 10/14/06. He was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq.

    Green Beret John Toomey was stationed in Alaska and served two turns in Iraq during which he was awarded the Bronze Star. John graduated from Columbia University in NYC as part of the largest class of CU military veterans to graduate since WWII.

    Captain Thomas Hardy (Poland, Ohio). US Army. Commissioned as a 2nd LT in 2003. Served 2003-07 as medical officer and executive officer, headquarters, 1-327th Infrantry, 101st Airborne Divison, 2 tours in Iraq. Presently automations officer, 30th Medical Brigade, Heidelberg, Germany.

    Robert A. Ray (Youngstown, Ohio). MOS. Entertainment specialist & Dental Assistant. 1972-1975. Served in Korea and Germany.

    Cpl Melanie Dawn Mitterando and her husband, Sgt Robert Mitterando III. Melanie was medically discharged from the USMC in January 2008 and her husband, Rob just returned May 12th, 2008 from his 2nd tour in Iraq.

    Gene Blair Sr. 1950-2005 Served in the US Army during the Vietnam war 1968-1972. Stationed out of Da-Nag, Vietnam when he first arrived "in-country". He was drafted out of high school and sent away.

    PFC Albert Dean Sampson. United States Army, World War II

    John ( Jack ) Guthridge (Boardman, Ohio). Served in the navy for over 20 years and served in the Gulf War. Retired from the service after the Gulf War and was killed in a industrial accident.

    Henry DeRamo. Graduate from Youngstown, Ohio. Henry was a radio operator in WW2 and was wounded in Cherbourg France June 1944 and again November 1944. Held a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and 2 oak leaf clusters. Henry was killed when a shell from an enemy gun hit his tank.

    Master Sergeant Earl S. Parker. US Army 106th Infantry division in Germany (today it's known as the Ghost Division). Captured at The Battle of The Bulge.

    Brandon Dillon Smith (Warren/Howland, Ohio). Age 23. Veteran of tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Phillip Floyd (Warren, Ohio). He served in Vietnam from 1969-1971 in the 4th Infantry division US Army.

    SSgt. Lee Sebulsky, USAF. Currently serving in Bagdad (since 11/07). He is a financial analyst who oversees the entire "war budget," and is earning his degree in Financial Accounting. He left college to enlist 9/01, and recently re-enlisted for a 6 year term. He hopes to attend officer's training in the future.

    Eugene (Buzz) Altemus. Served from 1944-46 all over the US, England, France, Germany and Switzerland. Combat Engineer, blew up and built new bridges. Saw The Battle of the Bulge where he captured a German prisoner and remained friends with him for 60 years.

    Cpt Audrey J Smith and husband 1LT Richard J Smith. Rick is from Hubbard Oh and his wife from Sarasota FL. They met in ROTC at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and have been married 3 years. They served apart in Korea and Iraq respectively for 14 months and now reside in TX at Ft Bliss.

    Adam Love (Damascus, OH - formerly Leetonia, OH). US Navy, currently serving second deployment in Iraq and soon to be again stationed in Honolulu.

    Lance Corporal John S. Parker. Marine Corp. Active duty 6 months, 2 years reserve.

    Lance Corporal Gabe Maine. US Marine Reservist. He, along with 43 other Marines, returned from a 7 month tour in Iraq on 3/08. His Motor truck unit is in Erie, Pa. They support active duty Marine units with transportation & mechanics. He drove a 7-Ton truck over 14K miles while deployed.

    Petty Officer 2nd Class Jerry Reinhardt. US Navy - Aviation Electrician. Served on USS Hornet during Vietnam War - 2 years Japan.

    Tony Andio, US Army. Served in World War 2 and recieved 2 purple hearts. He passed away 8-2-2004.

    ATAA Matthew Moore is a 2006 graduate of McDonald High School. He is an Avionics Technician attached to Squadron VFA-11 (The Red Rippers), in Oceana, Va. He was deployed in 11/07 aboard aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman to the Persian Gulf. The heroes aboard the Truman returned 06/08.

    Raymond P. DeRamo. Specialist 4th class U.S. Army 1964-1966. Served in Vietnam 1966.

    Ryan Lynch. He is currently stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

    Master Sargent Michael A Kermec Served 1942-1945, fought in The Battle of the Bulge in World War 2. Awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star. 10/25/1920 - 03/30/2007

    Anthony Fermendzin. He served in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean conflict. He was a Navy Corpsman stationed at the Navy Hospital in San Diego during WWI and in the same capacity on the USS Midway during the Korean conflict. Anthony passed away April 1, 2008.

    Retired Chief Master Sergeant John Barna USAF, Air Force Reserve 1972 -2005. 33 years of service.

    Charles P. Coleman, TSgt, US Army. Pacific Theater (New Guinea, Phillipines), WWII.

    Spc. Chad Holley. Served in Afghanistan for 15 months (Jan 21, 2007-April 7, 2008) as a SAW gunner with the 82d Airborne Division Bravo Company 1-508 Parachute Infantry Regiment.

    Master Sgt Ernest Johnson (Campbell, OH). USAF, Air Force Reservists in Vienna. Served in Vietnam, Desert Storm and Iraq.

    Sgt. Ryan Barna. 1 calvary Ft. Hood TX. He is leaving in June for his second tour in Iraq.
  •  
    Donald Eckenrode. Was a sergeant in the First Division of the U.S. Army during WWII. He received numerous Medals of Honor, including a Silver Star, A Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and five Battle Stars. He also participated in several initial landings, including D-Day in Normandy, Sicily and Africa.

    Spec Sgt James R Leigh III. Currently serving in afghanistan after already serving two tours in iraq.

    Carmen P. Moderalli (aka "Mootch"). Served in WWII US Army Air Corp as an Aerial Gunner 611 with the 484th Bomb Squadron who flew B-29's. He served most of his military time in Titan Island & Clark Field - Philippines. Carmen and his 5 brothers all served at the same time during WWII. 5/1/26-9/22/03

    Christopher Donegan, (New Castle, PA). US Army from 1981-1992. Deployed from Friedburg, Germany with the 5th of the 18th Mechanized Infantry, 3rd Armored Division in 1/1991 to the Persian Gulf for combat ops during the 1st Gulf War. He also served in the US Army Reserve for 18 months in 1993.

    SPC David Mickey (Cortland, Ohio) Gunner for Apache Co. of the 1st of the 501st IN (ABN), 4th Brigade 25th Infantry. Recipient of the Purple Heart medal for injuries received while serving at FOB ISKAN, 35 miles SW of Baghdad, on March 16, 2007. Presently stationed at Ft Richardson, AK.

    Thomas S Briglovich. US Army. Served in the Korean Conflict, Battery B Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He returned home on July 6 1951 from Korea aboard the transport Marine Lynx. This picture is of some of the men enjoying Thomas playing the harmonica. He passed away 8-4-88.

    Harold P. Miller Jr. He served in the marine corps in Vietnam and in the national guard in desert storm and was called for active duty to help in the Niles ohio tornado in 1985.

    Pvt 1st Class Albert R. Rich. 2 stripes, light machine gun crewman. After 2 weeks at basic training, he went off to be a machine gunner. He fought in the Pacific theater, 2nd Battalion, 18th Division US Army. At the Battle of Luzon, Manila, Philippine Islands he kept his boots on for 59 days straight.

    Tsgt. Thomas W. Ridge. He has been in the US Air Force for almost 18 years. He is currently stationed at Osan Air Base in Korea while me and our 2 children are in Youngstown waiting for him to come home. He left in 2/08 and is scheduled to return in 2/10.

    Stephen T. Basic Jr. served in the US Navy from October 1967 – August 1971. Steve was stationed on both U.S. coasts, in the Philippines and on the USS John F Kennedy CVA-67 out of Norfolk, VA.

    Lance Corpral Phillip Jacobs Serving in the Marines since January 2007.

    Anthony Rura - Stationed in Iraq right now. He has been overseas since Nov 07, will be home sometime in Jan or Feb. Home base is Fort Hood, TX. We are very proud of him. - Thank You Troops!!

    1 Lt. Joseph Brinsko. Currently serving a 15 month deployment in Iraq with the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment. Completed Airborne School and Ranger School. Before deployment, he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. His family lives in Lowellville, Ohio and his wife lives in Texas.

    Steve T Basic, Boatswains Mate 1st Class Petty Officer served in WW II on the USS Antietam. He was active in the Pacific Theater during WWII and the Korean War. He served in the US Navy from 1941 – 1950.

    Aaron Holt (New Middletown, Ohio). 6/8 CAV US Scout 3 ID. Recently returned from serving in Iraq.

    Lance Corporal Matthew Krueger. US Marine Corp. 2 years Japan - 4 years Active Duty.

    Roy Dyckman. Basic training at Parris Island, graduated first in class and made Private First Class. Served as the President's guard at the Whitehouse and at Camp David, then became a non-commissioned officer in D.C. Served in Okinawa then Vietnam.

    Sgt Mjr Michael Rakoci. Served 25 years in the US Army Reserve and served active duty in Desert Storm, traveling around Saudi Arabia setting up fuel points for incoming troops. He was presented with many medals including the Bronze Star.
  •  
    Jack Meister served in Northern Africa and Sicily during World War Two. Wounded on a Sicilian hilltop, Jack spent a month recuperating in a nearby cave tended by villagers and eventually was returned Stateside to receive the Purple Heart.

    Major Randy Velez. 1st row, 2nd from the left. (Hubbard, Ohio). Currently stationed at The Pentagon. Previously served in Fallujah and Ramadi.

    Keith Pugh Sr. Served in the National Guard and Marine Corps. Worked in the briggs at Parris Island. Died 4/2007 of cancer.

    Luke Johnson (Hubbard, Ohio). 3rd Battalion 8th marines of Kilo company. He is currently stationed at Camp lejune North Carolina and he ships out for Iraq this October.

    Mike Deem. US Army, served in Afghanistan, almost lost his life 4 times, but he is safe. He's now doing two year's of collage. Was and will be stationed in Fort Drum, New York 110 Mountain Division. Mike and his wife have two daughters Alex 4yrs old & Abby 3yrs old.

    Sergeant Joe Chaney. Served in the Army from 1986 - 1990. Served in National Guard from 2003 - Present as part of the 838th Military Police Company. Currently serving in Afghanistan.

    Michael A. Carosella. U.S. Marine Corps from 1980-1989. Ohio Army National Guard from 1990-2004. Was in Beruit in 1983, and in the first Golf War in 1991. Retired in 2004.

    Sgt Timothy Robert Overly. US Army. He is currently stationed in Iraq.

    SPC Kenneth Garling (Austintown, Ohio). 20 years old, and is currently based in Kuwait while he does security convoy all over Iraq. He is in the Ohio National Guard 148th Infantry.

    Mahlon Allgren. Gunner's Mate 2nd Class, DE-634 USS Whitehurst. Pusan, Korea 1950-1953
